La Trochita, affectionately known as the “Old Patagonian Express,” is one of the last remnants of the British-built railway network that once stretched across Patagonia.
The 400-km railway from Ingeniero Jacobacci to Esquel was closed for commercial use in the 1990s, but today, a short stretch of the track between Esquel and El Maitén operates for tourists. Visitors can enjoy a day trip on the vintage steam train, which was built in 1922 and hauls wooden passenger carriages through the Patagonian steppes.
